Is there a way to export the images in black and white without losing visual information? I need to convert the images to b/w because coloured images cost more to publish.

this hasn't been expected, but I can understand.
The visualization does heavily depend on colours. One wouldn't be able to recognize if something is up or down regulated because we use a relatively large colour range to discriminate the values. There shouldn't be a problem converting the images with some graphics program.

The only possibility within the program would be to use different shapes like we use for one of the search hit visualizations. I will think about that as an option, but I won't be able to deliver it instantly.
